Sentimental Tales: A Note on the Cover

This week we’re featuring Mikhail Zoshchenko’s Sentimental Tales. Today, we’re offering you some insight about the book’s cover. Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich is the cover designer for the Russian Library series. While the books have visual components that help them to hang together as a set, each also has its own individual design inspired by its contents. In Sentimental Tales, the shirt collar represents the main character, and the constraints of having grown up in the stiff old regime and trying to adjust to a new life he is not suited for, while the broken pencil becomes the attempts to write tales about this transition but not being very good at it.
