Almost Sixty Years of Publishing in Asian Humanities

Research and teaching on Asian civilizations have formed the bedrock of Columbia’s list for close to sixty years. Under the direction of Wm. Theodore de Bary, the Press published and revised influential anthologies, the Sources of Chinese, Japanese, Indianand Korean Tradition, that continue to be used in the classroom, along with recent Vietnamese and Tibetan volumes. These anthologies were followed by dozens of standard-setting translations, from Major Plays of Chikamatsu to The Art of WarToday, the Press also publishes modern literary translations and award-winning scholarship, often in partnership with Columbia’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute.
